Drupal Disapointments - is the community working?
Looking at the top search terms at drupalmodules.com, I was not surprised to see the top search term was for image. What IS surprising is that with 6 months since the Drupal 6 release, there is still not a stable release of the image module. (I am not picking on this module, but I have recently offered a patch and would love to know if I am going about it in the right way... hint hint.)
It is worse than that from the top four terms, all of which correspond to a module, none has a stable release out!
Some of this could be down to the rewrite that the Views module (one of the top 4) underwent, but that has now more or less stabilised and there are still too many modules still out there that have not been upgraded to drupal.
I am not trying to single any modules out because there can be many reasons for the delay and some modules I was gonna mention have had a developer response over this weekend and some modules depends on others that need to be upgraded first.
I am not sure, but a part of the problem may be that Drupal lacks "enthusiasts" and many of the developers are from established "shops" where much of the work is done when there is a project that needs toe module. I may be totally wrong, but if the case was different, I would have expect more module to be ready for Drupal 6. (and no, this is NOT a problem with the core Drupal release and its schedule. There was approximately a 6 month freeze during which many modules were upgraded to the new version and there has been a further 6 months and then some time to get the job done.)
People need to start jumping in and getting the work done. Lack of coding experience/skill is not really an excuse - I do not know much but I have created patches, upgraded a module and am trying to be helpful and create more patches to get the privatemsg module - another module that should ideally have been ready some time ago - up and running.
